As SJR transitions to a President/Principal leadership model, Mr. Michael Bruno (SJR '05) has been hired as the eighth principal of St. Joseph Regional High School, effective July 1, 2016. Current principal Barry Donnelly '71 will become the school's first President.
Mr. Bruno is a graduate of Seton Hall University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and History, and his Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Management and Policy. In addition, he recently completed the Catholic School Leadership Program at Seton Hall. He is certified with Advanced Standing in Social Studies (grades 6-12), has a N.J. Educational Supervisor's Certification, and a New Jersey Principal's Certification with Advanced Standing.
Mr. Bruno began his career as a substitute teacher for the Tenafly Public School system before taking a position as a full-time teacher and Admissions Director at the Academy of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tenafly. During the 2012-13 school year, he served Mount Carmel as Dean of Discipline and Admissions Director. In 2013-14, he became Vice-Principal of that school, and just a year after that, was named Principal.
The exceptional success he has enjoyed as an administrator at Mt. Carmel was one of a great many things that impressed the Search Committee about Mr. Bruno. Aside from being an SJR graduate and someone with first-hand experience in leading another Archdiocesan school, several other things stood out about him: his heart-felt commitment to Catholic education, his ability to articulate a clear vision for the academic growth of our school, his desire to enhance the use of technology throughout our instructional program and his dynamic, inspiring personality being foremost among many exceptional attributes.
Mr. Bruno was the unanimous choice of our six-member Search Committee, and he received the highest possible recommendation of the School's Office of the Archdiocese of Newark. Dr. Margaret Dames, Superintendent of Schools, called him "....an exceptional school leader who truly lives his Catholic faith in the example he sets. He has done an outstanding job at Mt. Carmel, where he is respected by students, parents and faculty alike. Though he will be truly missed at Mt. Carmel, he will be a tremendous asset to St. Joseph Regional."
Mr. Donnelly stated: "I am extremely pleased that Mr. Bruno has embraced this opportunity to return to St. Joe's, and am very much looking forward to working with him in my new role as President of our school. I was told at the outset of our search process that, for the President-Principal model to work effectively, it was important that we hire someone that I both liked and respected. After several lengthy meetings and interviews with Mr. Bruno, I can happily say that he unequivocally satisfies both of these requirements! I look forward to having the opportunity to introduce him to you in the coming weeks and to collaborating with him in advancing the mission of Saint Joseph Regional High School in the years ahead."
Added Mr. Bruno: "I am honored and humbled to have been selected as the new principal of St. Joseph Regional High School. Since 1962, SJR has been an exceptional Catholic high school with a well-rounded approach to student life, and as an alumnus, I have a deep appreciation for the storied history of this proud school. My goal will be to help guide these Faithful Men by advancing our academic programming and continuing in the rich tradition of our extracurricular offerings."
