This Week in SJR Lacrosse

Mountain Lakes - The Green Knights opened up the season against the reigning Tournament of Champions winner, Mountain Lakes. The game was close all throughout and it was a complete defensive battle. The final score was 7-1 in favor of the Lakers.

Iona Prep - SJR headed up to Westchester County New York to play the Gaels of Iona Prep. The Green Knights played a well-rounded game, but they ultimately fell to the New York parochial powerhouse. The score was 9-5.

Pope John (First Half) - There was an interesting scene in Sparta, New Jersey on Saturday. Prior to a postponement due to lightning, SJR was tied with the Lions of Pope John at halftime. It was 4-4 at the break when the lightning started, with Isaac Cruz ‘24 scoring a hat trick and Tommy Brennan ‘24 adding the other. The game will continue today at 4:15.

Pope John (Second Half) - Following the lightning delay last Saturday, the Green Knights headed back up to Sparta on Monday to play the second half. The score was tied at 4 to 4 to start the new half. Despite a solid comeback effort in the fourth quarter, the Green Knights dropped the game by a score of 9 to 7 to a tough Pope John team.

Ridgewood - The Green Knights matched up against the Maroons of Ridgewood High School for a Gibbs Division matchup. Despite showing flashes throughout the game, they were ultimately defeated by a score of 7-2.

Bergen Catholic - Perhaps the game of the year throughout the entire state, the Green Knights matched up against the Crusaders of Bergen Catholic on Saturday. It was a back and forth affair all day, but SJR held on to defeat Bergen on a Duke Richman ‘23 game winning goal in overtime. The final score was 11 to 10 in favor of St. Joe’s. This game was massive for the program as it propelled them back up the rankings in the county and the state. With that, the Green Knights’ offensive unit was clicking on all cylinders and they look to carry that into the future. Isaac Cruz ‘24 and Duke Richman ‘23 led the way with three goals each.

County Seeding - The Green Knights have received the third seed in the Bergen County Tournament and will face the winner of Pascack Valley and Tenafly on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
