Performing Arts

Theater skills are skills for life.” These wise words hang over the blackboard of a classroom converted by Saint Joe’s into a performance space for its nationally recognized, critically acclaimed, and ever-growing Theater Arts program.

The musicals at Saint Joe’s are widely known as the best in northern New Jersey, with parts for actors, singers, dancers, and stage crew. Talented girls from surrounding high schools join the young men on the stage each year, making plays one of the best ways to make new friends.

OFFICIAL CAST LIST

CALLBACKS: TUESDAY March 26!

A CHORUS LINE CALL BACK INFORMATION

Thank you for you interest in St. Joseph Regional HS’s production of A CHORUS LINE. As you can see, we have a tremendous turnout of talented young performers. In an effort to cast the lead and featured performers we will need some students to come back Tuesday March 26 th at 5 PM for GIRLS and 7 PM for BOYS. Information on who should come back to callbacks is posted on the SJR Performing Arts site. Not everyone has been called back but that does not mean you will not be invited to be part of the cast. Many students not called back will
still be in the cast of A CHORUS LINE. With over 50 students auditioning, not everyone will be invited to be in the cast. Those not in the cast will be invited to be part of crew and still be part of this production. A final cast list will be posted very late Tuesday Night March 26 th and the first rehearsal will be Wednesday March 27 th from 6 to 9 PM.
FOR THOSE CALLED BACK: See the list below with characters you are called back for. (check the entire list as many people are called back for multiple roles. You should bring clothes and shoes that you can change into if we want you to dance some more. Character sides and song cuts for callbacks are posted, the cut for Kristine will be posted by tomorrow afternoon, you do not need to be memorized. Callbacks are a tedious practice and to be fair to each person it takes time. We will allow students to leave at different times until the callbacks are fully complete. Please instruct your parents that you will text them when to be picked up.

SJR Les Miserables Reunion Recap & Establishment of Les Miserables Award

The "Welcome Home Night" during the February 2 performance of our recent production of Les Miserables marked a significant moment in the St. Joe's theater program's history.

The reunion of friends and cast members from the 2004 and 2011 editions of Les Miserables created an amazing atmosphere due to shared experiences. The night was filled with nostalgia, as old friends reunited, memories were revisited, and the magic of the SJR Performing Arts program was relived.

The highlight of the evening came when the alumni joined the 2024 cast on stage to sing "One Day More," creating an unforgettable moment that will be cherished for years to come.

Having witnessed 32 years of remarkable events here at SJR, it's clear that the impact goes beyond just high school theater. The growth of students as performers and individuals, the enduring friendships that have blossomed, and the unique camaraderie within the Les Miserables cast stand out among the many shows over the years.

The profound storyline of Les Mis has touched the hearts of everyone involved, embodying themes of compassion and unity that have become synonymous with the spirit of theater. The creation of the "Les Miserables Award," aimed at awarding scholarships to deserving students who exhibit outstanding character, further cements the legacy of Les Miserables at St. Joe's, ensuring that its spirit lives on through future generations of talented performers. I want to invite the families of the 2024 Les Mis Cast to join with the Les Mis Cast of 2004 and 2011 in creating this unique and very meaningful award.  Details on how to do that can be found in the link below.

SJR Performing Arts Previous Productions

Recent SJR productions have included Mystic Pizza, Something Rotten, The Addams Family, and Bright Star. Since 2007, the performing arts program has also included a spring comedy or drama. Recent productions have included Love/Sick and Neil Simon’s Rumors, which was named Best High School Comedy in New Jersey by the Montclair State High School Theater Awards program.

Our school musicals have earned the Papermill Playhouse Educational Impact Award a record six times, and our 2008 production of West Side Story earned national recognition as a USA Today High School Showstopper, one of only five high school musicals to be so named. Our 2015 musical, Miss Saigon, earned Nick Berninger ’16 the Rising Star Award for Best Actor in a Lead Role from the Papermill Playhouse. In 2017, Christopher Marzulla ’18 was named Best Lead Actor in a Drama by Montclair State for his performance in Ordinary People and in 2018, James Zitelli was named Best Actor in a Comedy for his star turn in Neil Simon’s Rumors. In 2021, our school's production of Something Rotten was named Outstanding High School Musical by Montclair State University, and Brendan Moran was awarded Outstanding High School Actor for his role in the production. Since the inception of our spring “non-musical”, Saint Joe’s has been nominated as Best High School Comedy/Drama for nine consecutive years, and has won that award four times. Additionally, members of the cast of our shows have appeared on Fox Five Good Day New York on several occasions, including a special on St. Joe's high school world premiere of Mystic Pizza in 2022. Our students may also be seen on Fox Five ushering in new seasons of American Idol with a cappella performances.

In 2018, SJR added the Inserra Theater Rehearsal Studio (which includes a full dance floor, makeup stations and complete property room) to its already outstanding facilities.

Whether it’s Summer Theater Camps for grade school students, private instruction from Broadway performers, or show time for the winter musical and the spring drama, the Inserra Theater at St. Joe's is always getting ready for its next opening night.

The Power of Music

Music speaks to us in ways that spoken words cannot. It can lift our spirits, change our mood and give us hope.   The St. Joe’s  Performing Arts Department, both past and present,  have performed songs that have done all that and more.  We have searched through our performance archives and will be sharing videos of these performances to offer some hope ( and entertainment ) to the SJR Community.  Stay well and enjoy –SJR Performing Arts
