Ordinary People is a 1980 American drama that concerns the disintegration of an upper-middle class family in Lake Forest, Illinois, following the death of one of their sons in a boating accident. The story deals with family conflict, survivor guilt, suicide and the healing power of therapy. Many have attributed the acceptance of family therapy by mainstream Americans to the popularity of this movie.
