Green Knights to Lean on Experience in 2026

Green Knights to Lean on Experience in 2026

by Joseph Lizzi '26

With a strong mix of experienced upperclassmen, emerging talent, and proven leadership, SJR track is back in action and ready for their final season of the year.

Co-captain Darren Coyle is paving the way for the team in his senior season. Coyle was a standout cross country runner this year competing in the Bergen County Meet of champs, leading the team to one of their best seasons in years. As a senior, Coyle brings a strong dedication to running as he sets the tone for what he hopes will be a strong and memorable final season.

"I'm looking forward to one last ride with the guys." said Coyle, "I will continue to motivate myself to work hard and be in the best shape."

Coyle's leadership will be crucial as the team navigates a competitive schedule and aims to peak at the right time.

Last season the team saw incredible success in the field events, where Vincent Pundzius '26 returned as a state champion in the shot put. His success has not only brought attention to the program, but has inspired more athletes to get involved in throwing events. Head coach Nick DeVito emphasized the impact, saying, "Having a state champ on the team has made the throwing events much more popular. Because of that a lot more guys are coming out to make this team even stronger."

With increased participation and momentum, the throwing group could become one of the team's strongest assets this spring.

Beyond the standout names, SJR's depth may be its greatest strength. The roster features a large group of returning juniors and seniors who are well versed in their events. This experience provides a level of consistency and confidence that will be key in close meets and championship settings. Whether it's sprinting, distance, or field events, the team is built on athletes who understand the demands of the sport and are ready to compete.

Although the season has already begun, the first meet is Monday, March 30th with at home against Bergen Catholic at 4 p.m. SJR stays home for senior day a week later, as they will host DePaul on April 6th at 10 a.m. for a meet honoring all seniors who participated in cross country, winter track, and spring track. The schedule continues with more dual meets and a few major competitions, including County Relays at Hackensack and River Dell in mid-April, followed by the Big North Championship at the end of the month.

As the team heads into May, the focus will shift toward championship meets, including the Bergen County Championships, the Bergen Meet of Champions, and ultimately, the State Championships at Stockton University. The top performers will then have the opportunity to compete at the State Meet of Champions in early June.

With strong leadership and proven talent, SJR Track is positioned for a successful spring. If the team can build on its winter momentum and continue to improve each week, it has the potential to make a serious impact in both county and state competition.
