Opportunities to Shape Your Future

Junior Parent Night

Attend this important information and planning session with your parents. The evening provides essential insights into making the most of your junior year and planning for the college application process.

College Fairs and Nights

  • In-Person or Virtual College Fairs:

    • Attend local college fairs with your parents to gather materials and speak directly with representatives.
    • The Bergen County College Fair is typically held in September at Fairleigh Dickinson University (Rothman Center).

  • Virtual College Fairs:

Explore Colleges Using Naviance

  • Utilize Naviance for college searches and to start developing your list of schools.
  • Schedule a meeting with your counselor (in person or virtual) after the December planning session.

Standardized Testing

Key Events and Deadlines

Fall

  • October: PSAT/NMSQT administered at SJR
    • Bring two #2 pencils and a calculator. This test qualifies students for the National Merit Scholarship Program and assesses critical reasoning, math, and writing skills.
  • October: Financial Aid Night
  • October: Junior Student/Parent Night at 7:00 PM

Winter 

  • January–February:
    • Meet with your counselor to plan senior year courses and review post-graduation goals. Discuss your academic needs, interests, and career aspirations.
  • January–March:
    • Participate in individual college meetings (virtual or in-person) with your family to:
      • Review transcripts and test scores.
      • Build a list of safe, target, and reach schools.

Spring

In-Depth College Research

  • Visit college websites to learn about programs, admissions, and campus life.
  • Use Naviance tools like:
    • Advanced College Search
    • SuperMatch College Search
    • Scattergram for determining reach, target, and safety schools.
  • Explore additional resources like CollegeBoard Big Future.

NCAA Registration for Athletes

  • If you plan to apply to Division I or II schools, register online at the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • Use code 9999 to send ACT/SAT scores.
  • Contact the NCAA Certification Center at 877-262-1492 for assistance.

Advanced Placement (AP) Tests

  • May 6-17, 2024: AP tests administered at SJR.

Summer

  • College Visits:
    • Schedule tours at the colleges you are interested in.
    • Make appointments online or by phone to ensure a comprehensive visit.
