Guidance Calendar For College-Bound Seniors

Planning for college can feel overwhelming, but this calendar is here to guide you step-by-step through the process. From refining your college list to meeting deadlines, we’re here to help you stay organized and prepared for this exciting journey.

Key Events and Opportunities

Fall 

  • October Senior College Guidance Night at 7:00 PM
    • For seniors and their parents, this session provides recommended procedures for the year, tips for easing the transition to college, and detailed instructions for requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation.
  • October: Early Decision/Early Action Application Deadline
    • Submit Transcript Request Forms to Guidance by this date for 11/1 or 11/15 college deadlines.
  • October: Financial Aid Night at 7:00 PM

Winter

  • December: Transcript Request Deadline
    • Submit all forms to Guidance for January 1st college application deadlines.

Spring

  • May: Advanced Placement Tests at SJR

Summer

  • Final transcripts and proof of graduation will not be sent until all obligations are fulfilled.
  • Colleges require final transcripts showing grades equal to or better than those upon which acceptance was based.

Action Steps for Seniors

September: Start the College Application Process

  1. Research Colleges:

    • Visit college websites and review their admission and financial aid requirements.
    • Some colleges require the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA:
  2. Work on Application Essays:

    • Start or continue drafting your college essay.
  3. Request Recommendations:

    • Ask teachers early to give them ample time to write.
    • Recommendations are submitted electronically through Naviance after you make an in-person and online request.

October–November: Meet Deadlines

  1. Early Applications:

    • Submit Early Decision or Early Action applications by October 15, 2023.
  2. Meet College Representatives:

    • Attend in-person or virtual meetings with college reps visiting SJR (September–November).
    • Register online two days before the visit.
  3. Attend College Fairs:

    • Check Naviance for updates on regional fairs like the Bergen County College Fair at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
    • Explore virtual fairs hosted by NACAC.

December–Spring: Refine and Finalize Plans

  1. Refine Your College List:

  2. Individual College Meetings:

    • Schedule in-person or virtual meetings with your counselor to review transcripts, test scores, and finalize a list of safe, target, and reach schools.
  3. Submit All Applications:

    • Make sure to meet deadlines and submit all required materials, including essays and recommendations.
  4. NCAA Registration (for athletes):

    • If applying to Division I or II colleges, register at NCAA Eligibility Center.
    • Send ACT/SAT scores using code 9999.
