End-of-Year Update

As we come to the close of a strange year, we, Mr. Bruno and Mr. McNulty, would like to thank all the SJR families for their ongoing support of our mission. Though things did not happen this spring as we would have hoped, our teachers and students responded with enormous energy and passion. When we surveyed families, the response to how we were doing was enormously positive. One parent wrote: I am beyond appreciative with how you and the faculty have handled this very strange and trying time. I know it has been very helpful in our house to have a hard start of 8:30am for classes to begin. It has helped to bring a sense of normalcy to the week. I know these are unchartered waters for all of us, but I have been very happy and all the more grateful that we are going through this with our St. Joe’s family.
Through the efforts of Campus Ministry, the boys led us in prayer each day, taking responsibility not only for their faith, but also for being leaders in a difficult time. We prayed the Eucharist in chapel during Holy Week, for Baccalaureate, and at close of year.
We gathered to serve, collecting thousands of sandwiches and tons of food to help feed the poor while we wrestled with quarantine.
We gathered virtually in class every day, but also as a school community for the Fashion Show, Cabaret Nights, and our Honors and Awards Ceremony for seniors. We also gathered in small ways when seniors came to campus to receive caps and gowns and enjoy a breakfast sandwich. We did it in an even bigger way when we distributed diplomas in a delightful celebration of the Class of 2020. And we are currently in planning stages for a graduation ceremony on July 18.
So what about September?
Know that we are planning on fully reopening in the fall, guidelines permitting. We are working with industry professionals to develop a comprehensive hygiene protocol so that we can assure families of student safety. We are also planning in the event that we need to function in some type of hybrid mode that would allow for in-person and on-line instruction combined. We are using the summer to plan and implement whatever recommendations come from the State of NJ, the Archdiocese of Newark, and to exceed them wherever possible.
In order for us to continue our quest for excellence, we invite families of 2020 graduates to share feedback about their St. Joe's experience. Click HERE to complete a short survey, we thank you in advance for your candor.

Finally, we will be reviving the Parent’s Guild, and plan to have an organizational meeting soon. If you would be interested in helping lead the organization of that, please send an email to

We thank you once again for partnering with us in the education of your sons. Have a healthy summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.
