SJR Starts the New Year and Track Season on a High Note

By Logan Dratch ‘26

On Monday, January 2, St. Joe’s attended the Big North Invitational Indoor Track Meet at Rockland Community College.  Although the team just returned from Winter Break, several athletes ran personal records and some even placed in the top six of their respective event even more impressive, several of the Green Knight athletes have never been in this facility before, and many have never ran on an indoor track before.

Elijah Smith and Ja’Dyn Williams led the sprinters by running similar and exceptionally fast 55 meter and 200 meter races. Smith won the 55 meter sprint with an impressive time of 6.7 seconds, and placed third in the 200 meter race by running it in 24.9 seconds.  Similarly, Williams won the 200 meter dash by running it in 24.7 seconds, and he placed 3rd in the 55 meter race with a time of 6.9 seconds.

The Green Knight Shot Put throwers also performed well in their division.  Kevin Konovitch threw 39-4 feet, placing him in third place, and Rob Stigliano threw 37-10 feet, placing him in fifth place.

Lastly, four of the distance runners, Jeff Guneratne, Jack Boyle, Logan Dratch, Matt McCarvill, each ran half a mile as part of a two mile relay.  Although several runners were new to relays, they had a collective time of 11:15 minutes, placing them sixth in their division.

Saint Joe’s indoor track team still has three months to improve their running and throwing skills, and there is no doubt that the season will end with a lot better athletes.  According to Mr. De Vito, “It was a great Season Opener, and it tells us where we are and what we have to do to prepare for the upcoming Championship and League Meets”.
