The Last of Us Review

The Last of Us is a franchise that needs no introduction for those familiar with the gaming industry. Finally releasing a live action adaptation, The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic TV series created by Craig Mazin for HBO and directed by Neil Druckman. The show is based on the video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog. The series premiered on July 1, 2022, and has received positive attention from both fans of the game and viewers who are new to the story.

The show follows the journey of Joel (played by Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor of a fungal pandemic that has devastated the world, and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey), a young girl who may be key to the cure for the infection, known as Cordyceps. Together, they travel through the ruins of the United States to reach a destination where a cure can be made, encountering dangerous factions and infected monsters along the way. The beauty of the story of The Last of Us stems from its characters. At its core the premise of the story is quite simple; however it is incredibly effective in telling a grounded, heartfelt survival story.

Overall, the show has received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike. One of its biggest strengths is its excellent performances from the cast, particularly Pascal and Ramsey, who have great chemistry and bring depth and nuance to their characters. The show also does a great job of capturing the bleak and oppressive atmosphere of the game's world. The production design, special effects, and cinematography all work together to create a haunting and visceral viewing experience.
