High Hopes Ahead for the SJR Winter Track Team

By Jack Meyers '27

Among the teams competing for SJR in the winter, the indoor track team is one that shows promise. Coming off their recent successes in the fall, the cross country runners of St. Joe’s will join other athletes in what they hope to be a successful season. With returning faces and plenty of freshman talent, the team looks to be in great shape for the coming season.

There will be some differences in specifically indoor track that some of the team will not be used to. For one, the track in the winter is only 200 meters a lap, as opposed to the standard 400 meter track we practice on at SJR. Also something to take note of is the addition of sprinters, jumpers, and throwers, who were not seen in cross country. There are many new people joining the team who specialize in these areas, and will only help in the success of the team.

The team this year is made up of about 30 athletes. “We have a lot of young student athletes on the spot…” says Nick DeVito, who is in his 22nd year as running coach at SJR. “There are a lot of freshmen and sophomores and a couple of strong upperclassmen that we're hoping to compete on the county and state level.”

As seen, the winter track team is showing promise in the coming season. With their athletes beginning practices this week, they are already getting prepared for the success they are expected to have. The first meet of the season will be the Paul Schwartz Invitational, taking place December 21 at Rockland Community College. The team is excited to be taking on this new challenge, and grow in running skills and knowledge. See the SJR athletics website for more information on the team’s upcoming season.
